5 Things You Probably Didn't Know About Your Library

You know we've got your favourite books and movies, free Wi-Fi, and great programs. But there's more to us than meets the eye! Here are a few fun facts you probably didn't know about East Gwillimbury Public Library.

1. There's a geocache hidden outside the Holland Landing Branch.

If you haven't tried geocaching, it's a fun outdoor activity where you use your phone's GPS to find hidden treasures in an area. These hidden treasures are called geocaches, which are small containers with a log and small takeaways inside. When you find a geocache, you can sign the log and exchange a takeaway item left by other geocachers. Good takeaways to bring for exchange include stickers, small figurines, or novelty erasers.

2. You can borrow things other than books and movies... even a sewing machine.

If you want to try machine sewing without a purchase commitment, borrow a machine from us! Machines come complete with a carrying case, sewing accessories, and a user manual.

Wondering what other unexpected items we lend? You can borrow a Blu-ray burner, GoPro Camera, and other unique technology items.

3. Our most borrowed item isn't a book. Our second-most borrowed item isn't, either.

Our Wi-Fi Hotspots get a lot of love (and huge circulation)! We're happy to lend these so people can access quality internet for work and play, anywhere in East Gwillimbury.

The second-most borrowed item? It's the DVD copy of Game of Thrones, Season 1.

4. The gatehouse on the Sharon Temple grounds is a former Library branch.

The former Queensville Public Library has been in various locations in East Gwillimbury, and is currently on the grounds of the Sharon Temple National Historic Site and Museum. After the Library was moved to a community centre in the 1970s, its former building was sold to the York Pioneer and Historical Society for $700 and moved to its current site. Read more about it here.

5. Our TD Summer Reading Club participants have spent 103,241 minutes reading since June 26.

East Gwillimbury is a community of readers! Kids, teens and adults here have turned A LOT of pages this summer... enough for 3.44 minutes' worth of reading for every person in the Town! There are exactly two weeks left to go for this year's Summer Reading Club. Interested in joining? Weekly prizes are still up for grabs. Sign up here!
